Comic Inque: What If?...The Missing Issues

I found out something very very odd....and aggravating at the same time, Marvel has not collected into trade paperbacks or hardcovers 109 of 114 What If? comic issues from volume 2.

Not to mention that the What If? classic trade paperbacks are missing issues from volume 1, why are all these issues from volume 1 and volume 2 missing from the trade paperback format?

I love the "What If?" comics, they offer great answers to many what if questions we've had over the years for the various marvel characters, titles and/or events. I decided to review the "What If?" comics, and it's going to make it almost impossible to review them in order. Why? This has to due with the fact that people today on places like amazon and ebay over prices many things as it is. I've seen a NES game that wasn't that rare, isn't worth more than maybe about $10 max in clean condition if it doesn't have a box....be listed for 50+ dollars and half the label was missing.

I can't imagine trying to track down over 109 missing issues from the trade paperback market, while some might be decently priced...others in bad condition might be overpriced and thus make it near impossible to collect every issue, let alone review them in order.

As a big fan of Marvel, I can't imagine what is going on with the 109+  What If? issues that have been collected in trade paperback or hardcover form. How would you feel if over 109 issues from one of your favorite comics series/titles weren't printed in trade?

Granted, they are one shots for the most part...but that's no excuse. I pray that marvel will hear my plea and print the missing What If? issues in trade.

State of the Blog Address: Januauary Update(s)

I had decided on reviewing 5 of my favorite movies, which would lead up to my review of the 1996 Doctor Who movie which is scheduled for release on January 26th (aka my birthday)...however I am no longer positive that I'll review those 5 favorite movies this month.

That could change still change, mostly depending on if I have the time to do each of them. I don't know if any of you whom are reading this know about my comments regarding editing, if you do not know...I hate it. It might sound kind of odd to people that haven't edited review videos and other such things, but it is an unbelievably long and drawn out process.

Given the tools and the fact that it's just me working on the reviews, it can take days to go from scripting for a review to the uploading of a published product. I tend to rush it a tad, or at least as much as possible so that I can just be done with it.

For movies, I'd have to pour and sift through 1.5+ hours of movie footage to find what I want in the review....what jokes I want in there....gather up clips, pics and/or SFX for jokes and whatnot. Often times when I'm editing, I cute out minutes worth of stuff I recorded because I didn't want to make a certain joke in the end or I wanted to keep the video from going over 30 minutes.

Recently I reviewed Rudolph's Shiny New Year, a movie that is only 70 minutes long. It took me around just over 2 hours to write a script for a video that after i finished editing clocked in at just under 16 minutes long. I think that's the shortest script I ever did for any review video, and even then...I still cut out quite of that movie's footage and even stuff I recorded to make it as short as i did. Had I did not, the review would have pushed the 30 minute max time limit I want on my videos.

In fact there was a rant I had about something in the video that could have gone for about 10 minutes just by itself, which i may get around to addressing at a later date.

Now that I got that out of the way it's time for other updates (please note the following list can and will most likely change over the course of the month):
  • I have bought the doctor who 1996 movie on dvd, once it gets here I'll start working on the script and gather materials needed for that review.
  • I have also bought a Doctor Who Top Trumps game for the Nintendo DS and may do a review on it, but don't hold me to that.
  • They Live is a movie in which I plan to review this month, but again....don't hold me to that.
  • The Doctor Who 1996 movie review will introduce somethings that will affect later reviews.
  • The Doctor Who 1996 movie review may or may not have cameos from certain UK reviewers that I like.
  • I honestly will be doing a couple video game reviews and/or a couple LP (aka Lets Play) videos, one of which will be a game I had wanted for nearly 20 year that I finally got back in summer 2012.
  • State of the Blog Address is something I should be doing every month, or every other month. It's just a cool sounding means of keeping you updated on my plans for the month in which they are posted.

Japanimania: Nostalgic Memories 2

It was in the middle area of June, 2010...I had come across something about an event that was going on for the pokemon wifi events at the time. The above image is an ad for a Goon's Scizor from the latest pokemon movie, and anyone with a japanese version of pokemon heartgold or soulsilver could obtain one. At first I was a little sad, as I didn't have either of those two games in japanese. But thankfully Serebii.net was talking about the event, and it said that you could get this if you had the japanese versions for pokemon diamond and pearl, which I did own.

You're probably wondering why I would own japanese copies of diamond and pearl right? Well, at the time that I found out about them...there was no US release date, I think. But I got the brilliant idea of buying them in japanese, get all the best pokemon and then transfer them to US copies of the games. Thus I would be able to beat all the newcomers to the US versions, trade for all sorts of really great pokemone etc etc.

During the event, which started on June 18th, 2010....I lived on meridian hill, which is located in the South Hill/Puyallup area of Washington State, USA. Unable to do the wifi event from the apartment I was living in, due to the fact our wifi connection was WPA and not WEP, I had to search for alternative means to obtain the Goon's Scizor.

I went on to nintendo's site to locate DS WIFI compatible locations, I found one in a place where I used to live. I had to bus from South Hill/Puyallup to Sumner, and then walk to the Sumner Library near the Sumner Sounder/Pierce County Transit Center. This was the first time I have ever done a wifi anything with a ds, so I had to look it how to connect to the pokemon wifi event because I was operating on a japanese game.

If I recall correctly, it took 2-3 tries before I got it working. Finally the Goon's Scizor was mine, and it was a great companion on my journey through pokemon diamond. My Empoleon aka Empor and the Scizor were a great duo, they helped carry me through the rest of the game.

Eventually I gained access to a Pokemon HeartGold and wanted to continue using my scizor, but I knew that it wouldn't listen to my commands due to a lack of badges...so I had to breed the scizor with a female scyther I caught on my game. I saved the only metal coat I had at the time for this very purpose, and thus Blade the scyther was born. Blade became my principal pokemon for HeartGold and we kicked major butt together in our travels. Having him follow me outside the pokeball was immensely awesome, reminded me of my pokemon yellow days.

But after I traded in my ds to get a wii, my poor blade and a few other pokemon were trapped on pokemon heartgold, after I got a 3DS XL I was able to rescue them. But before that, I caught another female scyther, trained up a mightyena to learn thief, and went in search of steelix. In pokemon diamond, steelix which have a low encounter/spawn rate of 5%...in turn have a 5% chance of having a metal coat on them (the irony is astounding).  For those of you who don't know, Metal Coat was something introduced back in the pokemon gameboy games of Gold and Silver, it's what allows Scyther to evolve into Scizor and Onix into Steelix.

Hopefully soon, I will have a pokemon heartgold or soulsilver, and thus the next scizor to arise from what has become the Goon's Scizor lineage. And that scizor will be bred, and that scyther shall be sent over to a pokemon black that I will own either this month or next month. And after that, it well be bred again and sent over to a pokemon black 2 that I will get when I beat pokemon black.

Scizor is one of two signature pokemon for me, the other being Deoxys, but back in the summer of 2010....I had no idea that the Goon's Scizor would have such an impact on the pokemon games I would get later. Quiet recently, I had picked up playing pokemon diamond. I am happy to announce that the Goon's Scizor is lvl 100, and a real power house.

We all have that special pokemon, our favorite or one that we truly feel suits us the most. For some it's one of the starter pokemon, or mewtwo...but for me, it's Deoxys and Scizor.

Japanimania: Nostalgic Memories

It seemed so long ago....

One year, in which my birthday coincided with the superbowl....I got a special present. Though I have forgotten whom it was from, I'll never forget it. If only I had taken better care of it over the years.

This is a pic I found on the internet of the same toy

"Technozoids: Battlesaurus", otherwise known to my mom and siblings as "Titanus".   here is a link to it's contruction: Battlesaurus

Titanus as I called the Battlesaurus (and still do), was my first introduction to the Zoids franchise. It was years after I got that toy that I came across the Zoids New Century Zero anime, and once again I formed a bond with the Zoids franchise as I did on my birthday when I got the Battlesaurus.

I regret not taking better care of that gift over the years, because it was an awesome gift. While I have managed to track down this Battlesaurus online, I sadly cannot afford to get it again. Maybe one day I can, or I could try to track down what's left of the original one I had and fix it somehow.

We all have gifts and/or presents like this over the years of our childhood, if you're aren't taking care of one that you got...you'll regret it, trust me.

For MarzGurl

I honestly don't know MarzGurl as much as I would like, she seems like she is a very interesting and great person. But...I am sure she is far more than that. I don't deny I wish I knew MarzGurl better, I'd love for her to be my friend, who wouldn't?

Like I said though, I don't really know her so I haven't earned that right. MarzGurl, like many of the reviewers I've come to be a fan of....was due to the Epic Brawl video. This was also how I came to be a fan of people like Angry Joe, Linkara, Lindsay Ellis aka Nostalgia Chick, and more.

I owe these people a debt of gratitude I can never truly repay, for what you may ask? All they did was review things and mostly complain, right? wrong. They inspired me to try and open up about such things myself, they didn't set out to make videos about them complaining like most people think, they did it to show their passion. Anyone can say that they hate a game, a movie, etc...but it takes someone who actually cares about them to explain why they like or hate something.

I don't even know if MarzGurl will ever actually read this, or all of this...but I admire her and I'm proud of all she has done. Even though she may not think so, she has done quite a lot.

Kaylyn Dicksion (which is MarzGurl's real name btw) like many of us, have suffered personal tragedies big and small. You can read about such things here: http://marzgurl.tumblr.com/post/35154740815/i-kept-trying-to-start-this-blog-entry-with-a

Kaylyn, even there are a great many of us who know nothing of the real you...we are still here for you. While I have not lost a family member except a grandfather who disowned my mother for having me and my siblings...I can sympathize. I did suffer a great personal tragedy once, and it hurts even now. I can't say that it'll get better, go away or lessen with time. But I and I'm sure many others like me will always be here for you should you need to talk, vent, or you just need a shoulder to cry on.

Please know that you will never truly be alone, granted...we don't actually know each other....but what kind of a human being would I be if I wasn't there for someone anyways?

You are an amazing person, I wish the best for you. At the very least, you'll matter to me. You are a good person, and I'll always be here to help you should you want it, you need only ask and I'll do my best.

For the SpoonyOne and other reviewers..

We as fans tend to disregard the personal lives of the reviewers we watch, in some cases I see fans posting comments like the reviewers owed them. That is not the case, we owe reviewers a great deal. I'm both a fan and a reviewer myself, so if I can admit that...can't you?

Look, I'm far from the best of reviewers out there. In fact, I wouldn't even be a reviewer at all if it were for excellent reviewers such as:
Spoony, Angry Joe, The Angry Video Game Nerd, the Nostalgia Critic, Linkara, even people like Guru Larry.

They inspired me to go out on my own, do my own reviews. Even with the poor editing I did on my first review vid on the demolition man movie...it still cracks me up. At the very least, if you can crack yourself up with your own stuff...then you must be doing something right. I do my reviews technically for me, other reviewers aren't reviewing something I'd want them to...so I do it myself.

That's a very important lesson we as fans need to learn, if a reviewer doesn't do something you like justice or even review it at all...then do it yourself. Give your fave z-list monster movie the attention you feel it deserves, or show other people why you think a game you like is good.

Another thing we as fans forget, is that sometimes we pressure reviewers into doing vids at a pace they just aren't accustom too. They'll often give every last ounce of themselves to meet deadlines they set, and most of the time I see people complaining that reviewers aren't going fast enough. I feel it's wrong to forget the personal lives of the people we're watching, they may have jobs...could be sick...or they could be going to 3 cons doing shows and panels for each of them on top of 4 or more review vids for their site.

Remember, some of the reviewers out there are doing this for us fans. Showing us what movies to probably stay away from and why, what games live up to the hype and which ones don't. I don't really remember seeing comments often about where a fan thanks the reviewer for the vids they put out.

I personally thank the reviewers for all the hard work they do, fans from anime to LP vids to video games should be more grateful for the work you've done and continue to do.

so once again...Thank You

Comic Inque: John Wesley Shipp

Today (being 6/29/2012) I totally nereded it up on twitter...yes, i tweet now.  The reason for that is the first person to respond...was none other than the infamous John Wesley Shipp!!!!!!! If you don't know who that is, than you are not a true nerd!!!!!!!!!!!!

Among other roles, John Wesley Shipp played Barry Allen (aka The Flash) in the live action tv series "The Flash". But he has also voiced Eboard Thawne (aka The Reverse Flash, Professor Zoom) in the "batman the brave and the bold" cartoon, the episode is title "requiem for a scarlet speedster"  if you wanna check that that out. The episode is surprisingly well written and does have that classic reverse flash vs the flash feel to it, my only gripe with that episode is that a few of the villains are voiced by dr. girlfriend/dr. mrs. the monarch.

Now, back to me talking about "The Flash" tv series. The series itself ran from September 20, 1990 – May 18, 1991, having a total of 22 episodes between it's only 2 seasons. This series may have been the first (american) super hero anything I ever remember seeing, such as before tim burton batman movie. Thus the series, and Barry Allen as The Flash will always hold specials places in my heart.

If you haven't seen the series, you can buy the whole series on dvd for around $20-$40 on amazon. Or you can buy/rent the episodes at 1.99 per via amazon video, either way the prices for the dvd set and the episodes are well worth it in my opinion.

John Wesley Shipp as Barry Allen may have been the first super hero I ever saw, and a chance to talk with the guy who played your favorite hero was just pure awesome. Mr. Shipp will always be a personal hero of mine and his barry allen is the best flash in my opinion. What's more is he voiced my fave flash villain of all time too, which is equally as awesome. Sort of coming full circle as it were, how many people do you know played or voiced your fave comic hero...then played or voiced the role of their greatest nemesis?

So here is to you Mr. Shipp, the best scarlet speedster there ever was.  Cheers

Nerd Rage: Marvel VS Gary Friedrich

Anyone who knows me, knows that my fave Marvel Comics team is known as the Marvel Werewolves. While they only got a few pages in the end of Marvel Zombies VS Army of Darkness #5, i still like them a lot better than I do the Marvel Zombies series comics.  Also, other than liking other certain characters (and/or teams), that may or may not have their own series...I am a fan of ghost rider, maybe not a HUGE fan...but a fan none the less.

So naturally when I hear that it's creator Gary Friedrich tried suing them for money and/or rights to the character, mostly due to using Ghost Rider in movies and such, I was like "More power to him". Only to find out however that he didn't just lose the suit...but Marvel in turn decided to seek revenge on him, by counter suing him from money he's made off the character, or money made in anyway that states that he is indeed the creator of the character.

Of all the low down bulls**** schemes cooked up by a company, this has to be one of the most petty things I've ever heard of. REALLY MARVEL!? I cannot believe you'd pull something like this!!!!!!!!!! This guy created something you're profiting on, and you're not going to let him make so much as even a penny from his creation?!!?!?!?!!?!?!?!

This is so low, you're starting to make the people who work for you seem like slaves.

For all you Ghost Rider fans, marvel fans...or comic fans in general, I say we rally against Marvel!

Spread the word! We need to rally together and stop Marvel from succeeding!

If we don't, then we're saying what they're doing to people like Gary is okay for them to do to any artist they employ or have employed.

Here is a link to an article about Gary's Lawsuit woes:
Marvel VS Gary Friedrich

Spread this blog post, or that article. Show your support, if you're on facebook change your pic to your fave ghost rider pic as well.

Critic Critique: Angry Joe #2

Well hats off to Angry Joe for earning the first Critic Critique #2, which is another look at a particular reviewer or reviewers' work. So, what is that earned him yet another look on this review blog? Why his Green Lantern movie game review...OF COURSE!!!!!! Had to have a byson meme in here somewhere ya know? Anyways, lets get started shall we?

Before I saw the review, I had seen pics of Angry Joe as a red lantern first. Needless to say after seeing the review and other reviews he has done, I'd say he'd give Atrocitus a run for his money. Not only did our newfound red lantern Joe do a good review, but the special effects for the review were great. I'd definitely recommend watching the review, especially again if you've already seen it.

The video has a definite re-watch value and it only further shows reasons why movie license games are just horrible. I give Angry Joe's review on the Green Lantern movie game a 12 kinds of awesome review, my highest stamp of sheer awesomeness I place on anything. For those wondering...I guess it'd be like an AAA+++ rating.

It has overall great video and audio quality, as well as very informative on what is and is not good about the game itself. Just watching the review got me seeing a Red Lantern Haze of Rage too, it offends me greatly as a Green Lantern fan. Just like Parallax in the movie, this game disappoints me as a GL fan. I don't want to spoil too much of the review if you haven't seen it yet. so here is a link for the video and have fun watching:

Comic Inque: DC Reboot *cough cough*

Linkara has spurred me into action about the DC reboot, long story short. I agree with him, and I sympathize with his connection to the teen titans. Have I read the titans story that really got him into comics? no..... Too be perfectly honest, I didn't read any teen titans stuff in general until Blackest Night. And yeah, totally confused as to what 90% percent of what people were talking about. It never dawned on me during the 3 times I've seen Linkara's countdown review vids, that's the same Donna Troy who helped wonder woman rip out the heart of the THEN wonder girl as of The Blackest Night.

I seriously "just" got back into comics because of The Blackest Night, and even then...the arc was pretty much over. I am dead serious about this, I got back into comics (after my falling out during the dark age) with only 1 month's issues of The Blackest Night left in the story arc.......so yeah, lots of catching up to do on just that alone. And I still haven't read everything, maybe a good 80%. Even then, I have since been trying to keep up with Brightest Day Green Lantern and The Flash comics, as well as catching up on lots of the DC universe titles.

I can't even begin to tell you, just how un-nerdy it makes me sound when I have to admit that I didn't know there was a Black Adam until only a few months back...even having read that power of shazam blackest night tie-in, again there wasn't a connection made at the time.

Now imagine what it's like to be a comic nerd with ADHD, Asperger's Syndrome, OCD and other such goodies who quite literally got back into comics pretty much around a year ago, and has spent a majority of the time researching and I'm no kidding about this....trying to learn everything about everything I could about 98% of every DC character and title I have grown fond of..............only to find that DC is taking the Robin Williams Etch-a-sketch memory eraser.

So...yeah, I am livid about it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How would you feel if everything you've learned and come to accept or come to loathe....now no longer matters?!  I mean come on DC, throw me a frickin bone here. I was pretty much sittin pretty, eagerly awaiting cranking out some really awesome (new *cough cough* vids for the reboot of my review show, and yeah...a lot of them were going to showcase me using DC stuff to solve problems such as being a GL. If Linakra can be a power ranger like time lord or Angry Joe being what seems like a Superman GI Joe (...which would make for an awesome comic by the way.), then I can be a GL wannabe.  oh yeah, cue the spoiler alert siren...oh drat...too late for that.

But at this rate, I am not too sure that GL stuff is even going to happen anymore. So....f***! It's times like this when I regret knowing sooo much about something I like extremely alot, cause I get really miffed when people like to destroy something I've rather come to enjoy. God help me if they ruin The Flash and Legion of Super-Heroes, my other fave comic series other than the GL comics. Knew something was really wrong when they couldn't even keep the GL timeline since the retcon of parallax straight. Dragon of the green lantern message board can attest to just how I just keep going in circles about it, sure he did come up with some reasonable explanations for the discrepancies, but until I see or hear from DC...I'll keep on believing what I do and harping on seemingly minor issues to the overall story.

The prospect of having to RE-relearn the history changes and the NEW current continuities is just evil.......  And what's worse is, I finally get to place when I can start collecting comics such as Trade paperbacks or hardcovers and the like, to really show off my nerd swag...only to find out, they're doing only digital stuff from now on. Personally I'd like to have my comics in paper form in case the power goes out and/or a giant EM burst knocks out the electrical devices around the globe, as a steampunk I'm covered in how to make steam tech....hey, it could happen and you'll never know when steam powered tech might just be the key to "rebooting" the modern world.

All you DC fans, now would be a good time to go all red lantern corps on their sorry butts.

Le Sigh.........

Comic Inque: The Legion of Super-Heroes

It all began as it often does, with an animated series based on a comic book or comic books. In the Superman TAS (that means The Animated Series), I caught a glimpse of a comic book series I would eventually come to love an awful lot. In fact, I'd rank it as a close second to my love for the Green Lantern comics. Which is also ironic, because Superman TAS also sparked my interest in Green Lantern stuff in general, so what episode out of all the DC animated shows out there could have sparked this?

That would be episode 3 of season 3, the title of this episode is called "New Kids in Town". For those of you who don't know or don't remember this episode, it featured members/characters of  "The Legion of Super-Heroes". Now granted I honestly have read all or even a sizable sum of the Legion's comic books, but I still can't help but say I am still a fan.

Also I can't say that I know all of their stories and whatnot, so I am unable to know if anything is being ruined through retcons and the like. What I've seen and read so far has not deterred my from liking the legion, however...I do have a couple of nitpicky things about it, and as a reviewer even I know that this series can't feign innocence.

My main gripe about this genre of the DC's comics is that for legion of heroes that spans worlds through out space...most its notable members and enemies...are too human looking. Especially since the legion of super-heroes is trying to abolish xenophobia in honor of Superman's acceptance on earth. I will admit this may not seem like a huge issue like the odd discontinuity story or two you get in GL comics since the beginning of blackest night...but it's still an issue that is worth noting in my book.
Another I have a complaint about is the legion's code on murder for the sake of justice, what I mean about that is that whole "do not kill" philosophy that superman is the champion of. Seeing as how he is the inspiration for their founding in the first place, shouldn't they adhere to it? Several times in the comic books and even in that one episode of Smallville, one or more legion members...namely Garth aka Lightning Lad has either spouted talk that alludes to or has done actions that suggest that the legion walks a fine line between the difference for Hero and Anti-Hero.

Now granted not everyone knows what that means, so as an example: Batman = Hero, Punisher = Anti-Hero. Anyone who knows these two characters enough, knows the difference between a character being a Hero and Anti-Hero. A hero is a role model we'd want to aspire to, someone whom does not kill people for the sake of justice. And anti-hero is someone whom is willing to kill for the sake of justice, regardless if that is their first or last choice.

Despite what people think, considering killing for the sake of justice does not make one an anti-hero, just actually doing it does. However, I'd have to say that leaving a villain in a situation that a hero knows will lead to their death lands them on both sides of the fence. True, the hero may not have killed the villain, the fact of the matter is that hero still let someone knowing die by refusing to save said villain.

The Legion cannot seem to make up it's mind on what it exactly wants to do regarding the issue of Hero vs Anti-Hero. Take superboy-prime for example back during final crisis, the general idea I got was the Legion wanted to kill him, or was greatly trying to cause his demise in some fashion. A number of times, the Legion went to extreme lengths to put a stop to prime and the legion of super-villains. I am still confused as to whether or not this "black witch" character actually killed members of the legion of super-villains or not.

Although I'd like to think she only took them out of the equation with extreme force, I still can't shake the feeling based on the wording in the panels...that she out right ended their lives.

Now that we got that out of they way, do I still like the legion's stuff? yes. As far as I know, the Green Lantern comics have way loads more stuff to question or complain about, yet I am still accepting of them none the less. I still have to recommend the
The Legion of Super-Heroes comics, given what limited stuff I actually know about the legion's history and what limited about of their books I've read....I'd say I give this about a 8/10

I don't care what anyone says about it, if you can't find even one thing wrong with a comic book series or character you like...then you honestly aren't a true comic book fan at all. In general, I think many people would agree with me on this. Take me for example, I love the Green Lantern comics but even I know there are tons of things I find that are wrong with it. I like Geoff Johns' work, even though he retcons something he himself put forth a couple years back...

Although we may not like to admit it, some comic book series and/or characters may not have been too great in the beginning or as of late.
